Abstract

Protein-losing enteropathy has been described as a gastrointestinal disorder associated with excessive loss of plasma protein into the gut. The diagnosis is established by small intestinal biopsy and demonstration of increased enteric protein
loss
using
radioactive macromolecules. Recently, some cases of protein-losing enteropathy were reported to have been detected by 99mTc-labeled human serum albumin (HAS) scan. We have experienced a case of protein-losing enteropathy associated with secondary
intestinal lymphangiectasia due to constrictive pericarditis. Small intestinal biopsy revealed characteristic focal dilatation of mucosal lymphatics. Abdominal scintigraphy by 99mTc-HAS was perfomed, which showed clear-radioactivity in the
intestine.
After pericardiectomy the patient improved, and the findings of protein loss and lymphangiectasia disappeared gradually. (Korean J Gastroenterol 1995; 27: 475-480)
